Technology smart home is a promising segment of the IT market
Google is betting on developing their own smart home gadgets, the company can beat Apple, Samsung and Amazon in this market. HB attended a presentation of the system of control of buildings Perenio and decided to investigate at what stage is the technology.
American IT giants offer their solutions in several categories to invest in all promising directions. So, recently it became known that Google takes the initiative over the subsidiary Nest and joins forces to develop smart home technologies.
Writes Cnet, managing Director of smart-home startup Nest Marwan Fawaz resigned after problems in the company.
Nest is owned by Google, but is, or at least was, an independent company. Now, however, predict that the home team Google, which is developing devices for smart home, combined with the Nets to develop and create more competition in this field.
Nest was founded in 2011 by two people from Apple. In seven years the company has been able to create multiple competing products, like smart cameras, smart locks, security alarm systems, thermostats and smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide.
Despite the small range of products and the low sales gadgets Nest have their advantages in comparison with the major players in the market – Apple’s HomeKit, Samsung’s SmartThings and Amazon Alexa. All sensors, cameras and locks Nest have similar harmonious design and can work together through a mobile application.
Question – can Google to give impetus to the development of a relatively young startup, or only ruin it, as is often the case with acquisitions by large companies.
Half a century of development
Some say that the technology of smart house appeared in the beginning of the 20th century, with the creation of the first electric vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, irons, washing machines, dryers, toasters and so on.
But the real prototypes of modern gadgets was created in the mid-60s when the company introduced the Honeywell kitchen computer, and the Westinghouse Corporation – electronic computer operator ECHO home IV.
The devices were too large, expensive and difficult to manage. They could automatically store recipes, control temperature, to keep track of home inventory, save energy and even to cook different dishes, but still not found wide application.
In the late 90s, with the development of the Internet and improve the performance of devices, different companies have started to offer the first modern technology for a smart home on a more or less affordable prices.
Now, smart home, in most cases, represents a symbiosis of systems of safety, security, climate control and control some household appliances, are combined into a single control unit hub.
Depending on the manufacturer and specifications of such systems can be endowed with various sensors and add-ons that are associated with a wireless network via the mobile app.
One of such services is a newly introduced company Perenio. The first version of their system of control of buildings includes wireless motion sensors, open doors and Windows, smoke, flooding, the control unit and two Camer – moving and stationary.
Information from sensors and cameras can be obtained in real time and viewed later, using the posted cloud storage company.
Mobile application which allows the management and control of all systems developed for IOS/Android and promises simplicity and intuitiveness in use.
Now, all the sensors and devices Perenio United thanks to a Wi-Fi network, but in the future the company plans to use the management centre with support of the LTE standard.
In addition, by the end of 2018, the next version of the system will be complemented by the smart outlet, street and Autonomous cameras, intelligent valves for shutoff water and gas. In the future, the company plans to add the platform of artificial intelligence, machine learning, face recognition and processing of big data.
In Ukraine sales of the first version Perenio will start from mid-summer 2018. The price of a starter set of sensors – from 5500 UAH. You may also purchase cameras, cloud storage and other services of the company. With the release of new sensors and updated systems, users will be able to sync them with the control unit of the first version, since the software is written for all devices on the same code.
Of course, it can be assumed that in the near future smart homes will be functionally similar to modern smart speakers, the type of the Alexa from Amazon. The development and scaling technologies of the Internet of things will allow you to consolidate the management of various household items in one mobile app.
Just imagine you are driving home in the car, remotely gaining himself a bath with precisely specified temperature, turn the coffee maker, if you see that the rain on the street – tightly closed Windows, and all this by pressing buttons on your smartphone or any other device.
Now, thanks to the cooperation of the same for Alexa and one of smart house systems in Australia, using voice control you can open doors, Windows, garage, adjust blinds, turn on the lights, TV, call friends, and literally ordered all the surrounding objects what to do. The system even has a code word signal to enable Serena.
It sounds like the plot of the film is about a astronaut stuck on a space ship and gives smart the computer commands and what to do. But many of these technologies are evolving now, and some of them even are on the market.
Of course, there are also disadvantages, for example the Australian system requires a separate space for the command and control server. And it costs a lot – from $2,000 to $3,000 for equipment of a room and about $150000 for the whole house.
In addition, experts predict a number of other problems. For example, the developer Dimitri Styliadis talks about a possible security crisis and personal data. Up to this point the people left only a trace number (in the form of dissemination of all sorts of information about themselves on the Internet), and, as it turned out, this trail was not really protected because different companies and individuals could use it for their own purposes.
Now, connecting to the world wide web, the objects that surround us, we will be leaving a physical trace. In the case of security breaches, information from these smart houses can be stolen and distributed. It threatens not only the theft of the records from surveillance cameras and data from various sensors, but also the influence and control of intelligent systems in the distance.
But is unlikely to fear such technologies today, as in medium 2000s, Apple introduced the flagship smartphone for years, and in the near future, perhaps the same one Apple will create an optimal version of a smart home.
