I’m back today with my new crafting companion the Cobalt Cricut Explore Air 2 to create a Star Tree topper! This machine would make the perfect Christmas gift for crafters like you or any DIY’er in your life!

My DIY Paper Star Tree Topper can be used in numerous ways. This year, I created a black and white themed Christmas tree, I loved the idea of a high-contrast black star at the top of the tree.

Of course the possibilities for this machine are endless! With the Cricut Explore Air 2 you can cut over 100 materials — everything from cardstock, vinyl, and iron-on to specialty materials like glitter paper, cork, and bonded fabric. Today, I am using it to cut poster board.

This beautiful Cobalt color is available exclusively at JOANN. It can cut and write, or score, at the same time up to 2X faster than previous Cricut Explore® models with this DIY speed machine.

What I love most is that this machine runs wirelessly through bluetooth connection and looks so smart sitting on my craft table instead of crowding up my desktop.

This also means that you can create from your iPhone or iPad using thousands of  images, fonts, and ready-to-make projects. Or you can create your own design from scratch.

DIY Paper Star Tree Topper Supplies

  • Cricut Explore (the Cobalt color is exclusive to JOANN!)
  • Blue or green cutting mat (a blue mat comes with the Explore)

Paper Star Directions

1.Download cut file to your computer.  I love that I can create my own custom designs and bring them in for free!

2. Upload the file to the Cricut Design Space. The final size of the star I created is about 12 inches. Feel free to scale the star to fit your tree proportionally in the Design Space. Set the center lines of each point to a score setting. There is a diagram in the PDF files included. Be sure to attach all of the pieces together so they cut and score on one page.

3. Load cardstock or poster board into the machine using the blue cutting mat.

4. Be sure to add the Scoring Stylus to the “A” slot on the machine, locking it into place. This will make the dimensional folds very easy to create accurately.

5. Once cut and scored, peel back the excess paper. Use the weeding tool to help remove the insides of the stars from the matte quickly.

6. Begin folding star along the scoring lines. Shape star so that the middle draws back to form a sloped triangle.

7. Using hot glue, attach the top and bottom of the star to one another. Adding a piece adhesive helps hold the two pieces together while the glue sets.

8. Cut a double length of wire and hot glue it along the vertical, scored seam of the  star.  Hold end of wire until hot glue sets.

 9. Wrap wire around the top of your tree.

Now you are ready to enjoy your custom made star! Making a paper star that coordinates with the paper sphere ornaments, opens the door to endless color variations for my Christmas decor. This year I chose a black and white theme, next year I could make it green, orange or any color under the rainbow. You can find the instructional video for making the paper spheres here.

Black or bright colors not your thing? Imagine the star created with metallic silver or gold.

From cards to custom T-shirts to home decor, Cricut® makes it easy to realize your creative vision.

I’d love to see your star! Send me a photo if you add one to your tree!
